The Maltese are welcoming a new change in their ID cards by the end of the year, as Malta is taking the steps in replacing all passports and previous e-ID cards to an enhanced and improved ones.

The change aims to strengthen the e-ID cards and e-passports’ security, as they will include a new feature of contactless chip to attain biometric data, which will eventually limit fraud and identity theft.

The Maltese will not be getting their new e-ID cards and passports immediately, as the process will be at a gradual manner and over the course of a number of years, while existing ID cards and passports will remain valid until their date of expiration.
